constitutional monarchy

the day draws near. soon, the iraqis will have their very own constitution, and our troops can get the hell out, and we can pretend some sort of progress has been made.

from the LA Times:

Galbraith said the draft fell well short of the sort of democratic government the Bush administration hoped to install in Iraq. “The U.S. now has to recognize that they overthrew Saddam Hussein to replace him with a pro-Iranian state,” he said.

that pretty much sums up the entire situation right there. we topple a government that was a pain in the ass (but kept the people fed, and for the most part, alive), and replaced it with what amounts to a civil war, with food shortages, unsubstantiated killing (on both sites), and general chaos.
