love monkey, that funky monkey

I was actually kind of looking forward to tom cavanagh’s new show, love monkey last night, but it turns out the cbs curse of blandness has already struck:

  1. he’s supposed to be spotting all this new talent, and instead of indie music or even something fresh, we get a bunch of rehashes. air supply? kc and the sunshine band? even the contemporary stuff was boring. mr. brightside from the killers, which is still being overplayed today. a song by badly drawn boy from a 3-year-old movie. they even threw in that new inxs song from the guy that joined the band through a reality show. I wouldn’t have been surprised if they started playing some of kevin federline’s tracks. needless to say, I was expecting things more along the lines of high fidelity and instead they gave us sister act 2. not a total sellout yet, but they’re getting there. even the wb does a better job at hunting down new music. I can only hope that the unsigned acts that are supposed to show up throughout the series, do so quickly.
  2. tom’s character – surprisingly named tom – isn’t much different from his most recognizable role, ed. in fact, he’s pretty much the same guy, minus the stuckeyville upbringing, and the bowling alley. I secretly hoped carol vessey would pop up and frown at the camera (which will probably happen when the ideas start to dry up).

that’s not to say ed was a bad show. but the idea was more or less a re-hash of northern exposure, and any funny moments it had disappeared as soon as rena sofer reared her gigantic show-killing head.

  3. then of course they had to have their token black guy, gay guy, and married guy. since it’s just not hip without someone gay these days. they should’ve saved some time and combined all those characters into one, at least it’d be slightly different.

that’s just the stuff I noticed immediately. but every show has it’s flaws; maybe it’ll turn into something better down the road. stranger things have happened.

a formula for dictatorship

I was going to post this in the links, but thought it would be much more prominent as an entry, because everyone of voting age should read what it says.

the article in question is an editorial by former congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, describing the possibility of george w. bush’s impeachment, and the precedent for these actions. it seems to be a well-researched argument, thoughtfully weaving through the actions and contradictions of our current executive branch, slowly demonstrating each piece of evidence to build its case. and it does seem to be a pretty valid conclusion. but there are a couple of things that ms. holtzman seems to have forgotten, things that will prevent an impeachment from ever seeing the light of day:

  1. the impeachment process requires a simple majority by the house, and a two-thirds majority in the senate.

since the republicans control both houses of congress, a vote for “articles of impeachment” will not pass without some serious defections in the party ranks. this is pretty unlikely. as long as the republicans wish to keep the leadership in congress, they won’t be letting anyone slide.

  2. dick cheney is vice-president. that means that cheney becomes president upon bush’s removal from office.

hello? does anyone want this to happen? however unlikely an impeachment would be, we’d only be getting more of the same with a different face. and he’d be bitter. oh, so very bitter.

needless to say, I remain unconvinced that any action can ever be taken.

state vs. state, state wins

guess I was the only one who expected a close game last night, though even I couldn’t predict an ending that close. but with d.will out since november, I had a feeling it wouldn’t be as easy as the “experts” thought it’d be. florida state had something to prove, just like texas does tonight. and when tony hunt was injured on the first drive, that meant the two main offensive weapons were gone. the night was a constantly unfolding chain of events; with so many injuries to key players, the lions had a tough time getting anywhere.

  1. FSU’s DBs were just as fast – or faster than – the lions’ freshman receivers, who don’t have the size to compensate. because robinson couldn’t get the ball downfield, they keyed in on the run early, and brought things to a halt.
  2. austin scott – tony hunt’s replacement at TB – while quick when he’s got room to run, has always been too slow to hit the hole, giving the defense ample time to close up. this, and his constant injuries, are why he’s #2 in the rotation.
  3. the combination of an injury to brandon snow – starting fullback – and austin scott’s poor blocking, more or less destroyed any hopes of pass protection.
  4. florida state probably wouldn’t have gotten that touchdown in the second OT if posluszny hadn’t been injured, and we all could’ve gone to bed a lot earlier.

hopefully texas will kick some ass tonight and make the title game as good as last night’s was.
