unsafe at any speed
the new volkswagen ads have been creating a polarizing effect on those who see them. there’s a real love-it-or-hate-it type of reaction, and I happen to hate them. it’s as if they’re trying to go back to their slice-of-life spots, with a last-minute “safety” scare thrown in. the whole thing seems about as natural and believable as a “the more you know” service announcement.
I definitely prefer what they were doing before, with the guy from “fargo”.

For anyone who has been traumatized in an auto accident or lost loved ones due to a collision, these ads re-traumatize. They are just a bit too accurate.
My other issue with them is that in the one where the 4 people are chatting about the movie, after the crash, they never show all 4 again. In fact, I never see the driver, in whose window we see the oncoming car. If they are going to make us witness their accident, they should at least make sure that all the passengers are easily visibly and noticeably alive and un-injured. However, I have not seen the “like” one.
The “Un-pimp my ride” spots are much better.

VW lost its edge a while ago. They used to be seen as a quirky hip car with good engineering. Now they have so few good ideas that they might as well be headquartered domestically.
To paraphrase a portion of their un-pimp the auto ads: It is definately sucking!
