I agree with 'Yr Mom, those are some good choices. Also, my used civic is great so far.

I would venture away from Mitsubishi, they make Katey mad.
Not only did they have credit problems, back in WWII they used slave labor (still havent said sorry) and were perhaps more brutal to their captives than the Japanese army.
Additionally Mitsubishi has had more environmental problems than most carmakers, their cars pretty much run on tropical hardwoods at this point.

More seriously...
new or used?

With used it's hard to beat Honda - and all the excitement that comes with it.

New?
If I were in the market again, it would be down to:
1.) Prius (again) - 50mpg, but you never save money re: normal compact.
2.) Honda Fit - cheap and fun, the way I like my women.
3.) Ford Fusion (4 cylinder, 5 speed) - a steal with the discounting, very reliable (It's a fresher Mazda6). Detroit in da house.
4.) Mazda3 - classy yet sporty, also not bad in a woman.

And aren't cars just like spouses?
Cost you a lot of money too.
