a relatively new site, muxtape, has launched in the hopes of bringing back the mix tape of days past.
it’s been done before, with things like last.fm among many, many others… but this is probably the simplest implementation I’ve seen. just click on a name to get to that person’s mix, and you’re presented with nothing but a list of songs. it also makes you think much harder about both the tracks you pick and their order, as you’re limited to only 12 songs.
the site’s a bit bogged down from all the new traffic, but it’s well worth the visit. have a listen to mine and try to figure out who I wrote the playlist for.
if you said “sounds like guster”, then you think the same way I do. only this song, where we went wrong, is actually by a group called “the hush sound”, and the rest of the album doesn’t really sound quite as guster-esque. mostly because the lead singer duties are shared between a guy and a girl instead of 3 hippies, but also because their lyrics are kind of… eh. mutemath may seem like one of those random bands with a crazy-ass video that you never hear again (and yes, that is a keytar). but the more I listen to their album, the more interesting it gets. their sound is kind of like a mix between snow patrol, the doves, and incubus, though they seem to have influences ranging from radiohead to linkin park to… the police? in fact, reviews by critics and fans seem to think that the lead singer sounds like sting, but I’ll leave that up to you to judge…
I’ve been experimenting with finetune, yet another of the music streaming sites like last.fm and pandora. the difference is that the interface seems much easier to use, provided you have flash installed. and since about 94% of browsers do these days, I’m pretty sure that won’t be a problem. the one drawback I’ve noticed is that it stops letting you skip tracks after a certain number. which I guess makes sense, since the whole point is to listen to the music.
they also get bonus points for having a wii version.
as an example, I’ve put together a playlist called chill – made up of mostly laid-back stuff – and added it to this post. there should be enough in there that you won’t hear the same track twice, but all the same, finetune seems to randomize the playlist each time. and no, I’m not about to add the player permanently, because I’d rather leave pages with annoying, useless embedded content to the myspace community.
